Book Review
Reviewer: Kevin Carson
Although we know Jesus’ command to share his gospel with the lost is clear, the task is often not that simple. The longer we are Christians, we can forget what it is was like to not
believe in God or the Bible as his inspired word. We struggle to anticipate what
a non-Christian’s questions might be, let alone how to answer them. Thankfully
“The Bible, Truth or Lies?” is here as a tool to help us with our outreach.
The author, Ken Sewell, is a member of the Waterview church of Christ in Richardson, Texas, who brings a unique perspective to the writing of this book. Ken earned a Ph.D. in physics, a MS in Aeronautical Engineering, and before his retirement spent several years in the defense
industry developing equipment to assist troops and aviators. Thus, he brings a scientific mind and logical, thorough, thoughtful approach to his defense of the Bible. He is also a mission leader in the church, having first-hand experience in the mission fields of Lithuania, Ukraine and other countries. Through teaching one-on-one Bible lessons to scores of people, many of whom had never read the Bible and who approached life from an atheistic or humanistic
philosophy, Ken developed a keen understanding of the thinking, questions, and misconceptions that they held. The result is a highly readable, effective book that makes a strong case for the Bible being the inspired word of God by examining the internal evidence for its reliability and truthfulness.
Rather than using a research or “textbook” format to present his arguments, Ken lays out the case for the Bible through a
fictitious but realistic conversation. The book opens with Shawn, a Christian, and Mike, a non-believer settling into their seats beside each other on a long overseas flight. Not long into the flight, Mike’s preconceived misconceptions about God and religion come out when he sees Shawn reading his Bible. Rather than take offense, or worse, respond with an ineffective emotional or stock
answer, Shawn respectfully and persuasively leads Mike into a deeper examination of the Bible. As we read, we learn both what non-Christians often think about the Bible and why they think the way they do, as well as how to effectively engage them in a conversation and Bible discussion to answer their questions and lead them to be more open to God’s word.
Ken describes his book this way: “Is the Bible just a collection of myths or is it the book that many confess as the book God gave mankind. What does the Bible say about itself? Does it contain the evidence to prove or disprove its origin? Join the conversation
between Shawn, a believer, and Mike, an unbeliever, as they investigate the Bible’s internal evidence as to its reliability and truth. Mike has a lot of questions he has accumulated through the years as a student at a state university. Does the Bible contain the answers and can Shawn direct him to them? They explore the primary questions raised by modern atheists as they take aim at
the Bible’s consistency. These are critical questions for Christians. If the Bible is inconsistent, can it be God’s Word? Read along as they turn to the book itself and seek the answers only within its pages without turning to anyone else’s opinion to understand what the book itself says.”
The book can be read by Christians to help equip them in sharing their faith. It could also be given to a non-Christian to read on their own, to be followed-up with conversation or discussion. Ken has published the book digitally, resulting in a low cost and the ability for “The Bible Truth or Lies?” to be read on mobile electronic devices. It is available through Amazon.
