Think about it for a moment. How many reasons can you list? I will only mention two in this brief
blog, personal relationships and the Bible. When I look back at my life, I find
these are the most powerful movers in my life.
Is the Bible enough to convince a person that Jesus is the Son
of God and that he or she should obey him? Probably, but for me, it took both
people living according to Jesus’ teachings and the Bible. I suspect that is
true for most. We need someone to demonstrate the power of living the Golden
Rule: treat others as you want them to treat you. You probably know someone who
has demonstrated that to you, either a parent, relative, or friend. That rule
came from Jesus. Others had worded it as treat others as they treat you. There’s
a world of difference between the first version and the second. The ones who
demonstrated that to me really caused me to want to become a Christian.
Even if we have known Jesus from our childhood, there often
comes a time when we test the basis for our faith. That’s when we must be
convinced that the Bible is truly God’s word.
Many people who grow up in a land where Christianity is not as
prevalent as it is in the U.S.A. find that they like Christian values and
Christians, but they don’t become Christians because they don’t believe the
Bible is truly God’s word. Without that foundation, they find it difficult to
accept Jesus’ resurrection and his promise of life forever with him as well as
the consequences for unbelief.
So what will convince them? We can resort to history and
science. After all, the Bible has been accepted for about two thousand years and
it still is applicable to human needs and events. There are no scientific laws
or facts which contradict the Bible. But is that enough?
To me, the most powerful evidence regarding the Bible’s
truthfulness is its own internal consistency. From the very beginning, it
proclaims God’s awesome power and soon begins to drop clues as to the mystery of
God’s plan. From the time the first book was written, clues were inserted in the
various books all the way though a 1500 year time span as to someone coming. The
mystery wasn’t revealed until after Jesus’ resurrection and the apostles began
teaching. But all though that time, the Bible is consistent in its message.
Explain how that could happen without God being behind it all. Where is another
book like the Bible?
