The Congressional Medal of Honor is only awarded to those who exhibit conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against any enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. All of the men and the one woman who received this award are heroes. Yet, they are not my No. 1 Hero.
He grew up in a working class family and was soon engaged in the family business. When he reached maturity, he set out to accomplish his goal. It was a lofty goal that would claim his life before he accomplished it. He knew that attaining that goal would require much sacrifice from him. It would require leaving his family, making new friends, and enduring hardships including ridicule from friends, neighbors, and the leaders he looked up to a
boy.
We build memorials for our heroes, such as those for Washington, Lincoln, WWII fighters, etc. in our nation’s capital. There’s a memorial for my hero too. It’s a simple memorial which millions recognize regularly throughout the world. All it takes is the right attitude, a small piece of unleavened bread, and the juice from the grape.
