It's a place that is very hard to avoid because it’s in your own home by
email or telephone. Scammers attack almost daily with an appeal to your emotions
ranging from greed to compassion. Whether it’s a chance to make a quick buck
with a small investment, or a friend or relative who has taken a trip to Spain,
London, etc. who has been mugged, arrested, etc and needs you to wire them some
money, or offers a reduction in
your credit card interest rates, the scammers keep coming at you.
Although the attacks don’t cease, the good news is that you can
protect yourself. Here are a few guidelines:
· Protect your personal information such as social security number,
credit card data, birthdate, drivers license number.
· Don’t send any personal information in response to an email or
telephone call. Legitimate businesses don’t ask for that.
· Don’t open any attachment in a email unless you know the person who
sent it and there is a personal message to you along with it. It’s
likely to be a virus waiting to enter and hijack your computer. A favorite trick is
to send messages from your friend’s computer so you will feel comfortable.
· Always check your emotions with good judgement. Delay your response
and check with a friend .
Keep yourself safe and have a Happy New Year.
