Seeds Display the Glory of God
By Ken Sewell
Recently, as I listened to a teacher expound on Jesus’ Parable of the Sower recorded in Matthew 13, Mark 4, and Luke 8, it hit me that the tiniest of seeds contain and display the glory of God.
No one has ever been able to make a seed. People can genetically alter plants, but it is my understanding that the modification is done with the plant and not with the seeds. I’m not an expert in this area, so if I am wrong, please correct me. God made seed producing plants and the planting of these seeds have continued to produce crops of the same plant ever since. Even genetically altered plants are still what they started with, i.e., beans produce beans, corn produces corn etc.
The seed, no matter how small or large contains all the information it needs to form and grow into the proper plant when placed in the proper soil and water environment. It also contains all the information it needs to not grow into a different kind of plant. Some seeds have been stored for thousands of years and when planted produce the same kind of plant that produced them. Yes, the seed displays the glory of God.
Jesus compared the message about the kingdom of God to the seed in the parable. Whether it grew and produce additional seeds depended on the soil it landed it. In good soil it sprouts, grows, and produces an abundance of additional seeds.
Paul, in 1 Corinthians 3, compares his preaching to planting the seed, the word of God. Another man came later and watered the seed, but it was God who made it grow. Just as God makes a seed grow into a plant, He will make the seed of the gospel grow in men’s hearts. And just as a seed will produce only the right kind of plant, God’s word (seed) will produce only God’s people. And that displays the glory of God.
In 1 Peter 1, Peter says that if we have been born again, we are born of imperishable seed through the living and enduring word of God.
God made the seed to serve a specific purpose as well as to display his glory. We can be sure that if we plant God’s words in the heart of people, we will be producing God’s people.
